Steel is the natural choice for many construction solutions, which is borne out by the market share it can boast.  It has a 95% share of the single story framed building market and a 70% share of the multi-storey commercial market, the remaining percentages being taken primarily by in-situ concrete at over 19%, and pre-cast concrete, load bearing masonry and timber taking in total about 11%.

A significant proportion of the 1.4 million tonnes output in 2008, was taken up by other sectors such as health, education, domestic, power, infrastructure, schools, hospitals and residential. For example 70% of all new educational buildings in the UK use a structural frame.

Cost effectiveness is one of the many advantages of structural steelwork. This position is reflected in the long established independent industry-standard survey, which has measured the relative market share of structural frames annually since 1980.
