In October, British Steel announced their 'Low-Carbon Roadmap' demonstrating its commitment to long-term sustainable steelmaking and the delivery of net-zero steel by 2050. It's important that the domestic section producer for the UK has issued this plan, which includes the building of an EAF plant and to facilitate carbon capture and storage for its BF-BOF plants by 2035.

President's Column October 2021

With the recent news of Cleveland Bridge going into administration, I remember back to a time in 1994 when I was a student at Imperial College. Over a period of a couple of days we visited Wards Structures, Cleveland Bridge and the Humber Bridge. My lasting memory was viewing the life size deck section that Cleveland had built as part of its work on the Tsing Ma Bridge in Hong Kong. What a shame that a UK company of that standing has failed.

President's Column September 2021

Compared to the last six months, the atmosphere in the industry today does seem a lot more stable. The majority of steelwork contractors seem to be much busier now and for the next six months than they were the preceding six months; for many a “feast” after a “famine”.

The instabilities caused by BREXIT, the COVID-19 pandemic, large scale price increases, scarcity of supply and the climate emergency have all made the last 12 months interesting to say the least.

President's Column May 2021

I didn't think anything would topple sustainability and steel section prices off the most talked about issues in the steel construction industry. Well cold rolled deliveries have managed to do it! I know many steelwork contractors are having some very difficult conversations with Tier 1 Contractors in relation to the delivery and price of cold rolled products. Cold rolled suppliers have an excellent track record of servicing steelwork contractors in a just-in-time fashion, but long-term relationships are being tested in the current climate. Where Tier 1 Contractors have won competitive orders with "old" prices and "old" lead-in's, somewhere along the line there are going to be problems. The secondary effects of the COVID-19 lockdowns are now being seen all through the supply chain.
